“While I was on another assignment, the shadows cast by the rising sun onto the frozen Cedar River caught my eye,” says Gazette photojournalist Nick Rohlman. “The morning light and long shadows from trees on the bank created an interesting texture. After I made the pictures I had planned on, I took a little extra time to play around with those shadows. The patterns created by the shadows and the opportunity to play with perspective combined with this fallen tree and a mix of animal tracks reminded me of M.C. Escher’s woodcut ‘Puddle.’ This photo is my own modern take on that idea, using a drone instead of chisel, wood and ink.”
