Two men have been arrested in connection with an assault in December on the Iowa City Pedestrian Mall and police are seeking the public’s help to identify another person of interest in the case, according to the Iowa City Police Department.
Ryan Maschmann, 22, and Landan Provino, 21, both of Wayland, were arrested and face charges of willful injury and participating in a riot.
According to criminal complaints, Maschmann, Provino and a third person who hasn’t been charged had an altercation with someone on the Ped Mall just past midnight Dec. 14, 2024, and then followed and attacked that person.
One person held the victim’s hands behind their back while another person hit the victim in the face. Once the victim fell to the ground, all three attackers punched, kicked and stomped on the victim until the victim lost consciousness, the complaints state.
The victim had several injuries, including a broken nose, a broken finger, lacerations to the ear and lip requiring stitches, bruising and injuries to the face, abrasions to the elbow and knee and laceration to the back of the head, according to complaints.
The Iowa City Police Department issued a news release about the assault Jan. 7, asking the public to help identify three people of interest. Warrants were issued Jan. 16 for Maschmann and Provino and they both were arrested Jan. 17. Both have since been released from the Johnson County Jail after each posting a $10,000 bail.
The police department released information about the arrests Wednesday, with another photo and request for the public to help identify a person of interest. Anyone with information about the assault should contact Officer Jeffrey Schmidt at jschmidt@iowa-city.org.
