Robert (Bob) Walter Trumbull, 96, of Coggon, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at the Dennis & Donna Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha, Iowa. In agreement with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of Bob’s life will be held in the spring at Coggon Legion Hall.
Bob was born on November 4, 1928, in Coggon, Iowa, the son of Dewey Doane Trumbull and Ellen Wilson (Main) Trumbull. On March 1, 1952, he was united in marriage to Jewell (Ellad) Irwin in Seaside, California. They celebrated 70 years together before Ellad passed in August of 2022.
Bob served in the army during the Korean War, as a supply sergeant. Bob worked in Coggon, at John Deere Implement, Savage Lumber Company and did chores for Lowell Halderman. From 1965-1994 he owned and operated Bob’s DX on Main Street, Coggon. After retiring he continued to work part-time for Farley Construction and The Midwest Athletic Club. He was an elder at the Zion Presbyterian Church in Coggon and attended services at both the Zion Presbyterian and United Perish. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Lions Club, and the American Legion. He was Mayor of Coggon. He was a volunteer firefighter for Coggon Fire Department. Bob and Bob Henderson were honored by The City of Coggon, renaming the city park after the two most long-standing citizens, Henderson-Trumbull City Park. Bob enjoyed all types of work, wood working, watching Western movies, a love for animals (and they had a love for him), traveling and most of all being with his family. His faith in God was a quiet one but his commitment was strong, with an outward kindness to all. Bob was a man of few words but when he spoke, there was so much wisdom there. Bob and Ellad enjoyed wintering in California with Ellad’s sister, Elzena and her husband Larry.
Bob is survived by three children, Thera (Paul) Nelson of Marion, Jackie (Wayne) Meier of Ely, Robert T. Trumbull (Buck) of Cathedral City, Calif., daughter-in-law Deanna Trumbull (Russell Haynes) of Iowa City, seven grandchildren, Leia Nelson, Luke (Bobbie) Nelson, Chelsey (Jeremy) Oberreuter, Cutis Meier (Samantha Adams), Jessica (Ryan) Kohls, Austin Trumbull, Logan (Fiancé, Julia Lantz); six great-grandchildren, Tristian, Treyton, Tressa, Nicholas, Tavan, and Kyen; brother Don Trumbull of Fairfax and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, youngest son, Ray Trumbull, Bobby’s partner, Larry Rupprecht, and one sister, Corinne Sauer.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Bob’s memory may be made to The Coggon Historical Society, PO Box 57, Coggon, IA 52218. Cards may be sent to The Trumbull Family, c/o Jacqueline Meier, 5110 Indian Summer Ct. S.W., Ely, IA 52227.
