In 1956 John F. Kennedy wrote a book called, “Profiles in Courage.” In it he documents instances of politicians who faced difficult/unpopular decisions that potentially could do major harm to their careers. They wrestled with their responsibilities to represent the constituents of their state/districts,concerns for what was best for their country, and their own personal beliefs and values. Nowhere did JFK state loyalty to one man was a factor.
Sen. Joni Ernst certainly is facing a dilemma concerning the nominee Pete Hegseth for chairman of the Department of Defense. She must weigh her support for women in and out of the military and her knowledge of what qualities are needed to lead 3 million men and women —she must weigh this support against the abilities, or non abilities, of this nominee and President-elect Donald Trump’s wishes. She is facing a huge decision. I encourage her to have courage to make the right decision for the American people. Sen. Chuck Grassley also needs to show his courage when the full Senate votes on nominees. He has nothing to fear from Donald Trump. His position in Iowa and Congress is secure.
I ask both senators to confirm nominees to the Defense Department, and all the cabinet departments, who are the brightest and best candidates to lead our nation. Don’t let one individual’s wishes overly influence these decisions. Have courage.
