A group of seven donors and UI leaders this month have launched a national search for the next president of its $2.2 billion philanthropic enterprise after Lynette Marshall in May announced plans to retire.

Wrapping two decades of service shepherding billions of dollars of philanthropy to the University of Iowa and its auxiliary enterprises like Athletics and UI Health Care, UI Center for Advancement President and CEO Lynette Marshall on Wednesday announced plans to retire in summer 2026.

As the University of Iowa works to comply with Board of Regents directives and legislative mandates to curtail diversity, equity, and inclusion work across campus, its philanthropic foundation – the UI Center for Advancement -- is grappling with how to handle the tens of thousands donated to a longstanding diversity fund.

The University of Iowa this week officially exited the “silent“ portion of a new fundraising campaign, aiming to generate more than $3 billion, by announcing that it already is halfway to that goal — which, if achieved, would top its last capital campaign record by more than $1 billion.

Taking that trademarked term and idea from the University of Wisconsin — which is offering three two-day Grandparents University sessions this July — UI is starting with a single day of learning for grandparents and grandchildren on July 13.
