“Cruelty must be whitewashed by a moral excuse, and pretense of reluctance.” — George Bernard Shaw
Let me get this right: the federal government wanted Iowa to accept $29 million to feed 250,000 kids, school-aged children in low-income families by giving them $40 a month to spend on food for the summer! But Gov. Kim Reynolds turned it down; indicating poor people do not know how to feed themselves so instead she is going to spend $900,000 to give 20,000 children boxes of “acceptable” food for the summer. Cruel, shameful behavior! It is just plain mean! That is kicking the poor when they are down. One of the problems with cruelty is it makes the bystanders cruel, they make it acceptable.
Reynolds should be ashamed of herself! What kind of person would do such a thing and what kind of people approve of this behavior?
Old Scrooge‘s partner Jacob Marley was forced to carry his sins and greed as chains in his afterlife. It is sad to envision the governor and her supporters’ carrying chains.
"Do the right thing. It will gratify some people and astonish the rest." -Mark Twain.
