In 1977, Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids introduced "Quiet Quentin's Peculiar Pain," a charming 20-minute video designed to comfort pediatric patients and ease their anxiety about hospital stays.
Quentin, a bright green frog, became an instant star, guiding children through the intimidating world of medical tests and surgery.
The story begins with Quentin experiencing stomach pain and visiting his doctor, who sends him to Mercy Hospital for tests. The video gently introduces young viewers to procedures like X-rays and surgery, showing Quentin's journey from diagnosis to a full recovery.
Mercy Hospital premiered the film with weekend "Punch Brunch" screenings, inviting families to experience the hospital environment together. Quentin became a regular visitor to the pediatrics floor, offering comfort and familiarity to young patients.
Nearly a decade later, in 1986, Quentin received a makeover, courtesy of Joyce Harken of Mount Vernon, ensuring he remained a beloved fixture in Mercy's pediatric care.
You can learn more about Quentin and the 125-year history of Mercy Medical Center at The History Center in a new exhibit, opening Jan. 23.
