Former Facebook data scientist turned whistleblower Frances Haugen on Monday told lawmakers in the United Kingdom working on legislation to rein in social media companies that the company is making online hate and extremism worse and outlined how it could improve online safety.

“I think one of the problems is social media can be helpful but it's no substitute for what regular journalists do,” he said, adding that it concerns him that some people use social media to circumvent the news media,“ the Cedar Rapids Democrat said.

“This is just simply immoral and unethical that they will set up an environment that hurts kids,” the Iowa Republican said.
