Barbara Anne (Morton) Tiernan was born December 27, 1934, in Mount Hope, West Virginia the daughter of Lacy R. Wilhelm and Irene M. (Maloney) Wilhelm. She was raised in Fayetteville, NC by her mother, Irene and stepfather, Robert Morton. Barb graduated from Fayetteville High School in 1952. On November 1, 1952, she was united in marriage to John D. “Jack” Tiernan who was serving in the U.S. Army. During Jack’s 20-year career in the Army, the family lived in Germany, France, Okinawa and Fayetteville, NC. They settled in Williamsburg in 1969. Barbara was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, serving many years as a Catechism teacher and on Altar and Rosary. She was a volunteer at Williamsburg Community Schools, a member of the Iburg Poulson VFW Post #8797 Auxiliary and Red Hats.
Barbara was happiest when her home was full, and people were fed. People were her love language. Her warm, Southern accent, wonderful baked goods and caring embrace let one know they were loved.
Barbara passed away, with her family by her side, on Thursday, December 12, 2024, at the Highland Ridge Care Center in Williamsburg at the age of 89 years.
She is survived by five children, John (Patti) Tiernan of Williamsburg, Robert (Regina) Tiernan of Marion, Michael (Susan) Tiernan of Marion, Susie (Dan) O’Rourke of Williamsburg and Meredith (Chris) Carter of Iowa City; 15 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren, sister-in-law, Mary Ann Donohoe of Parnell and several nieces and nephew.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Jack in 2023, brothers, Lacy Wilhelm, Jr, Lawrence Wilhelm, Jerry Wilhelm and a sister Jean Green.
Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. on Monday, December 23, 2024, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Williamsburg. Visitation will be held Sunday, December 22, 2024, from 2:00 to 5:00 pm, at Powell Funeral Home, Williamsburg. There will be a prayer service at 2:00 pm on Sunday and an VFW Auxiliary service at 5:00 pm at the funeral home. Burial will be held at St. Joseph Cemetery in Parnell.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to VFW Auxiliary or Williamsburg Community Schools.
