Joyce Ann McPartland, 86, died Wednesday, Dec. 27,
2017, following a yearlong battle with cancer.
She is survived by her husband, J. Pat McPartland; sons, Dennis (Julie), Sean (Tracy) and Bryan; four grandchildren; and a sister, Cindy Carillo of Columbia, Md.
Joyce was born in Cedar Rapids on March 18, 1931, to Milt and Albia Dwyer. She graduated from Wilson High School in 1949. Following high school, she worked in classified advertising at The Cedar Rapids Gazette, where she met Pat, who was working as a Gazette reporter.
Joyce and Pat were married April 14, 1951, at All Saints Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids.
Joyce's lifelong passions were her family and friends, her home, her garden and reading. After her sons were born, she loved being a stay-at-home mom. She and Pat were part of a couples potluck group for 45 years. She was a naturally talented gardener and interior designer. She had a lovely home and beautiful garden. Her bouquets from her garden were spectacular.
She was a night owl who loved to stay up reading and drinking coffee. She also was known for her love of sweets and always had a few hidden around the house. Joyce was an avid bridge player for over 50 years.
Her bright blue eyes and sense of humor will be greatly missed by her family.
A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2018, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 857 Third Ave. SE, Cedar Rapids, with a visitation starting at 9 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Joyce's name to Camp Courageous or Hospice of Mercy in Cedar Rapids.
Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
