As reported by The Gazette, Gov. Kim Reynolds does not intend to have Iowa participate in the Summer EBT program in 2025. I believe this is a mistake as the Summer EBT program is the best tool we have to fight child hunger over the summer.
I am glad Reynolds recognizes Iowa is facing a hunger crisis. One in six children in Iowa are food insecure. The Summer EBT program would serve 13,995 kids in Linn County alone who are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. My own grandchildren are three of these kids. As an advocate with Save the Children Action Network and as a grandparent, I will continue to fight for all children in need to have nutritious food during the summer months.
Organizations with expertise in fighting hunger recognize Summer EBT is a tried and tested program proven to dramatically reduce childhood food insecurity and improve nutrition during the summer. Last week, SCAN gathered with hunger advocates across the state to call on Reynolds to change course and ensure Iowa participates next year.
Gov. Reynolds, I implore you to stand with me, the Iowa Hunger Coalition, and the kids and families who make up your constituents by participating in Summer EBT. Summer EBT is the best program to help Iowa reduce food insecurity and improve nutrition so all children in Iowa can succeed and thrive.
