CEDAR RAPIDS — A Cedar Rapids man was arrested Tuesday on a charge that he stole almost $20,000 from his neighbor, who has dementia.
John Herrington, 48, is charged with first-degree theft against an older individual. According to a criminal complaint, he stole $19,817 from a 79-year-old woman between May and August of this year by taking money from her bank account and transferring it to himself using CashApp, an app that can transfer money between people.
The woman, who has been diagnosed with dementia, lived across the street from Herrington’s address, in the 1500 block of Bever Avenue SE.
A warrant was filed for Herrington’s arrest in October, and he was taken into custody Tuesday. He had a first appearance in court Wednesday and is being held in the Linn County Jail on a $10,000 bond.
