What to know: Iowa has lost its last eight games to teams ranked third or higher. Its last win against a Top 3 team was 83-70 over No. 1 Michigan State on Dec. 29, 2015.
The home team has won eight of the last nine games in this series. Iowa State dominated last year in Ames, 90-65. Keshon Gilbert had 25 points for the Cyclones. Gilbert is averaging team-highs of 17.4 points and 5.5 assists this season.
The Hawkeyes are coming off an 85-83 loss at Michigan Saturday. They entirely erased an 11-point second-half deficit before falling.
Iowa State’s lone loss was 83-81 to current No. 2 Auburn in Hawaii. The Cyclones beat current No. 6 Marquette in Ames last week, 81-70. This is ISU’s first true road game.
This game features two point guards with quick hands. Iowa State’s Tamin Lipsey averages 2.50 steals per game. Iowa’s Brock Harding is second in the Big Ten with 2.56.
Five Cyclones average at least 10.4 points, including senior guard Curtis Jones, who has come off the bench to average 16.3. Transfer forwards Dishon Jackson and Joshua Jefferson average a combined 21.8 points and 14.6 rebounds.
Iowa State is fourth nationally in turnover margin, sixth in scoring margin, seventh in assists-to-turnovers ratio, and 11th in field goal percentage. Iowa is 10th in assists-to-turnovers ratio and assists per game.
Iowa has made 66.0 percent of its free throws. Last season it made 77.4 percent, the second-best mark in program history.
The Hawkeyes haven’t outrebounded a team in their last six games, and were outrebounded by an average of 12.5 in their split against Northwestern and Michigan last week. Iowa guard Josh Dix averaged 19 points and 6.5 rebounds in those games, and played 75 of the 80 minutes.
Tuesday, Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery said he thought sophomore forward Seydou Traore would be able to play in this game after missing the last two with ankle injury. McCaffery said freshman forward Cooper Koch was a maybe.
