Gaylord Michael “Mike” Davis, 73, of Cedar Rapids, also affectionately known as “Boz” to his lifelong friends, passed away November 19, 2024, at his home.
Mike was born August 22, 1951, in Boone, Iowa, the son of Lawrence “Bud” Davis and Patricia Mickle. As a teenager, he moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with his mother. As a young adult he became a member of Laborers’ Local 43 where he worked tirelessly in construction until his retirement in 2012. He married Debra Perez on October 7, 1974, and during their 25 years together they had four children, Joshua, Johnnie, Sossity and Sillina. In early 2001, Mike met Doreen San Fratello and she became his loving companion until her death in August 2016. In addition to his own beloved family, Mike formed close bonds with Doreen’s family who held a special place in his heart.
Mike was an avid outdoorsman and music lover who found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He spent countless hours fishing, bowling, golfing, watching NASCAR and in his younger years, playing baseball and softball. His love for music, especially the soulful sounds of the blues, was a constant in his life, whether he was listening at home while playing along on his harmonica or attending live concerts. He had a deep appreciation for nature, finding peace and inspiration in the great outdoors. He was an exceptional storyteller and enjoyed sharing memories from his past adventures with friends and loved ones. Above all, he cherished time with his family, never missing a chance to watch his beloved grandchildren participate in their activities and cheered them on with pride.
Mike will be missed by his children, Joshua (Anita) Davis of Dallas, Georgia; Johnnie Davis (Jamie Watson) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Sossity (Scott) Davis-Hand of Palo, Iowa; Sillina Davis (Mike Troendle) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; his grandchildren, Kaylee, Ethan, Jaydon, Clayton, Kaliyah, Izabella, Zyler, Deklan, Gwen, Paige, Nolan, Janis and 5 great grandchildren; step-mother Lois (Mitchel) Davis (Cliff Nolte); brother Randy Davis (Paul Ellmore), sister Becky Vanek, and sister Melissa (Shawn) Davis-Oviatt; as well as numerous extended family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and loving companion.
Per Mike’s wishes, a service will not be held; however, a Celebration of Life will take place at a later date. Cremation rites were held privately at Cedar Memorial funeral home.
In remembrance of Mike, the family asks that any charitable donations be made in his honor to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Fish and Wildlife Trust Fund. https://programs.iowadnr.gov/donations
