A day after he was sentenced to 100 years in prison for two rapes in Black Hawk County, a North Liberty man was arrested Tuesday on charges he assaulted a woman in Center Point and attempted to sexually abuse her in 2023.
Asante Walker-Garcia Adams, 27, is charged with second-degree robbery, third-degree kidnapping, assault with intent to commit sex abuse, first-degree harassment and false imprisonment in the Linn County attack.
According to a criminal complaint, the assault happened on May 3, 2023, outside an apartment building in Center Point. A woman reported she was leaning into her car from the passenger side to put something in the center console when a man approached her from behind. He put his hands around her neck and forced her face into the car’s seat, and told her if she resisted him he would kill her.
The man then pulled the woman’s shirt over her head and eyes, and moved her behind the apartment building. He told her to take him into her apartment so he could rob her, the complaint said. But after watching around the corner of the building for an opportunity to go through the front door, he moved her back to her car and attempted to remove her pants. He tried to start the vehicle and she was able to escape to a neighbor’s apartment.
Police later identified Walker as the man from his fingerprints left on the window of the woman’s car, and he matched a physical description provided by the woman.
A warrant for his arrest was issued in July 2023, and he was booked Tuesday into the Linn County Jail. He had an initial appearance in court Wednesday and was being held on a cash-only, $1 million bond. A no-contact order has been filed on behalf of the woman.
On Monday, Walker was sentenced to a century in prison for sexual assaults in Waterloo and Cedar Falls a month apart in 2023.
Prosecutors said Walker entered a Waterloo woman’s apartment near Hawkeye Community College in March 2023. He held a knife to her 3-year-old son’s neck and raped her. He later burglarized an apartment on College Street near the University of Northern Iowa in April 2023 and raped the woman who lived there.
Walker also faces a trial in January on charges he raped another woman in Iowa City in June 2022. Iowa City police responded then to a sexual assault report in the 600 block of S. Lucas Street. The victim said she was in bed when a man burst in, punched her in the face and pulled a sheet over her head, a criminal complaint shows.
