Dr. John Ernest Tyrrell, 100, of Manchester, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, November 30, 2024, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester. He was born on July 18, 1924, in Greeley, the son of Clark and Mable (Rhines) Tyrrell. John graduated from Greeley High School. He was drafted into the United States Army and honorably discharged after serving during World War II. John received a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart for his service. He then attended and graduated from the University of Iowa and the University of Iowa Medical School.
He was united in marriage on July 11, 1949, to Clarine E. Wall, in Iowa City. Six children were born to this union. John began his medical practice in Duluth, Minnesota before moving back to Manchester. He worked with Dr. Clark before opening his own practice where he served the community for many years. John was known for all his community involvement. Some of that involvement included being a member of the Iowa Board of Regents, Manchester Enterprises, development of the Rec Center, and the war memorial located in Manchester. John also was a member of the Lions Club, Manchester Methodist Church and the West Delaware School Board.
He was an avid Hawkeyes fan and had tickets to the Hawks’ football games for 70-plus years. Later John also had season tickets for Iowa Hawkeye wrestling and basketball. Besides enjoying the Hawkeyes, John enjoyed spending time with his family and many friends.
Survivors include his five children, Clark (Sue) Tyrrell of Manchester; Greg (Jenny) Tyrrell of Winter Garden, Florida; Gary Tyrrell of Tucson, Arizona; Mike Tyrrell of Manchester; and Sara (Tom) Riehl of Des Moines; 10 grandchildren, Adam (Brittany) Tyrrell, Jessica (Dave) Jaffe, Andrew (Julide) Tyrrell, Elizabeth (Caleb) Ledford, Abigail Tyrrell, David (Caroline) Tyrrell, JoAnna (Jon) Mee, Daniel Tyrrell, Sam (Aimee) Tyrrell, and Josh (Olivia) Tyrrell; and 19 great-grandchildren.
John was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Clare in 2009; daughter, Kathleen Tyrrell; two sisters, Arlene (Robert) Johnston and Edna (Russell) Smock; and a brother and sister in infancy.

Funeral Service with Military Honors: 10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 4, 2025, at Manchester Methodist Church in Manchester, Iowa, with Reverend Phil Rogers presiding.
Visitation: 2:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, January 3, 2025, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Manchester, Iowa.
