IOWA CITY — The City of Iowa City has appointed Chris O’Brien as its new deputy city manager.
O’Brien, who received his master’s degree in business from the University of Iowa, started in the role earlier this month. He previously worked for the city from 1997-2017. He ended his first tenure with the city as transportation and resource management director.
"We are excited to welcome Chris back to the organization as a key member of our management team. With his extensive operations experience and strong ties to the community, he is a tremendous asset," City Manager Geoff Fruin said in a news release. "I am confident that he will quickly make an impact and play a vital role in helping us deliver exceptional public service while advancing the strategic goals set by our Council."
O’Brien follows in the footsteps of former deputy city manager Redmond Jones II, who was hired in 2022 at a starting salary of $135,102.
