John Behounek, 86, of Cedar Rapids, died peacefully at home on Saturday, November 23, 2024, surrounded by his family. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Friday at All Saints Catholic Church by Rev. John Flaherty. Burial: Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday at the church. Teahen Funeral Home is assisting the family.
John is survived by his daughter, Beth (Steve) Hennessy; son, Mark (Melinda) Behounek; grandchildren, Morgan, Chris (Brandy), Mike (Erika), Colin (Melissa) and Molly (Noah); great-grandchildren, Riley, Mason, Jameson, Ellie, Nathan, Bennett, Eden, Maeve and Lyla; siblings, Rita (Larry) Sevcik, Fran (Jeanie) Behounek, Cathy (Jack) Wilkinson, Bernie (Jackie) Behounek, Damien (Bernita) Behounek, Mike (Penny) Behounek, Mary (Joel) Willaby and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ida; his parents Louis and Emma; sister, Barb Banes; brother, Anthony; niece Charlotte and nephew Randy.
John was born on the family farm in Chelsea on January 15, 1938, the son of Louis and Emma Kubik Behounek. He graduated from Chelsea High School and entered the Army in 1956. He then went on to Cedar Rapids Barber College and became a barber at Wichman Barber Shop. John married Ida Naughton on July 27, 1963 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids. He worked as a welder at FMC for many years and then retired from Dudak Construction. John was a member of All Saints Catholic Church and was a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus with Council #5677.
John was a devoted husband, father and great-grandfather. He was a talented woodworker who shared his talents with his family and friends and his memory will live on through the work he created.
John’s family would like to thank the staff at Unity Point Hospice and to his many friends that were always by his side.
A memorial fund has been established in John’s name.
