Iowa’s NCAA women’s soccer tournament run ended Sunday night with a 1-0 loss to Virginia Tech at UCLA’s Wallis Annenberg Stadium in Los Angeles.
The No. 3-seed Hawkeyes (15-3-4) hit the crossbar in the first half and the post in the second, but were ultimately shut out in their first third-round appearance.
No. 7-seed Virginia Tech (14-5-3) advances to face No. 1-seed Duke (14-2-1) in the quarterfinals. Six of the eight remaining teams are from the ACC. The Big Ten’s USC and Penn State are the other two.
The Hokies outshot the Hawkeyes 11-9 and pulled off their second upset of the weekend to move on to the NCAA quarterfinals for the second time. They beat No. 2-seed UCLA, 2-1, on Friday.
Sunday’s game took 50 minutes for a shot on target and a defender provided the only goal without — it appeared — intending to shoot.
Virginia Tech’s Allie George crossed a ball from just outside the right side of the box that drifted toward the goal, over Iowa goalkeeper Macy Enneking’s outstretched hand and into the net with 10:30 to play.
Iowa tied a school record for wins this season.
