Mary Kathryn Hanken passed away peacefully on Sept. 5, 2017, at St. Francis Hospice, Honolulu, Hawaii, surrounded by her close friends.
A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, at St. John Lutheran Church, rural Monticello, with interment in St. John Cemetery. Friends may register after noon Saturday at the church. The Rev. Reed Stockman will officiate at the services. Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello, is assisting the family with the service. Mary was born Jan. 21, 1947, at John McDonald Hospital, Monticello, Iowa. She was the daughter of Frederick and Ellen Bohlken Hanken. The eldest of four children, Mary graduated from the Monticello Community Schools with the Class of 1965. She attended the University of Iowa, graduating from the College of Pharmacy in 1970.
After residing in Phoenix, Ariz., she later moved to Hawaii, where she continued her career as a hospital pharmacist for many years. As a result of her dedication, the lives of many women and children were preserved and enriched.
Mary was an avid traveler, visiting many countries, including China, Japan, Ecuador and Ireland, to name a few. She also made frequent trips to visit family in the Midwest. Mary enjoyed spending time with her Iowa family and sharing mementos and stories of her travels with her nieces and nephews. Mary was a lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church in Monticello.
Mary is survived by her siblings, Ann (Robert) Briggie, Ruth (Dave) McNamara and Bill (Sue) Hanken; her nieces and nephews, Ben (Joey) McNamara, Shawna (Andrew) Kachel, Heather McNamara, Joseph Briggie, Molly (Connor) Grask, Lauren (Quinn) Robinson, and Erin and Katherine Briggie; and a great-niece, Emerson McNamara. Mary was preceded in death by her parents.
