Two teenagers accused of breaking into Iowa City’s West High School in August and holding down and stabbing another teen have pleaded guilty to burglary charges.
Moayed Elsid, 16, of Iowa City, and Tion Exum, 17, of Coralville, both were initially charged with first-degree burglary. Last week, they both pleaded guilty to third-degree burglary and willful injury and were sentenced to three years of supervised probation.
A third teen — Nathaniel Washington, 16, of Iowa City — also was charged with first-degree burglary in the case. Although all three cases initially were filed in adult court, Washington’s case was later waived to juvenile court, according to Johnson County Attorney Rachel Zimmermann Smith, and an update on his case was not publicly available.
According to criminal complaints, the three teens — who were not students at West High — broke into the school after 10 p.m. Aug. 23 and chased another teen through the hallway. They were caught on surveillance video punching, kicking and stabbing the victim, who sustained a cut on his left arm.
The criminal complaints do not give any information about the victim, but a no-contact order was filed on his behalf.
