Marilyn Louise Burnell, 84, of Springville, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, at her home. In agreement with her wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no funeral service held. The family will greet friends from 5 - 7 p.m. on Monday, November 11, 2024, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion, Iowa. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Mt. Clark Cemetery in Central City, Iowa.
Marilyn was born on September 22, 1940, in Coggon, Iowa, the daughter of Carl and Nadine (Hill) Swanson. She was a 1958 graduate of Coggon High School, where she was a star basketball player for three years, playing six on six. On October 26, 1958, Marilyn was united in marriage to Jack Dean Burnell in Coggon and to this union, they had five sons. She was a homemaker to her family and was also employed at Square D for 31 years, before her retirement in 1998.
In her earlier years, Marilyn enjoyed waterskiing, camping every weekend with the boys, and all the motorcycle trips to Washington, Florida, Texas, Colorado, and California. Together with Jack, they enjoyed their classic cars and going to many classic car shows. For 17 years, they also loved traveling south for the winters. Marilyn was very kind and an excellent cook. She loved gardening, her flowers, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Marilyn will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Marilyn is survived and lovingly remembered by her husband of 66 years, Jack Burnell of Springville; five sons, Mike (Mary) Burnell of Central City, Jeff (Renee) Burnell of College Station, Texas, Dan (Sondra) Burnell of Mt. Vernon, Iowa, Tim (Jackie) Burnell of Centralia, Washington, and Jack “Willie” Burnell Jr. of Central City; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; aunt, Shirley Peyton of Des Moines, Iowa; sister-in-law, Marvel Swanson; brother-in-law, Rick Burnell of Rowley, Iowa; special friend, Myrna Noska; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Donald Swanson; one grandchild, Casey Burnell; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Harold and Alberta Burnell; and classmate and dearest/closest friend, Karen Crowley.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Marilyn’s memory may be directed to Camp Courageous, 12007 190th Street, Monticello, Iowa, 52310.
