What to know: The season starts Monday night. If Iowa doesn’t extend its winning streak in season openers to 14, something has gone horribly haywire.
It’s the first of three Hawkeye home games in a nine-day period, with Southern University Thursday at 7 p.m. and South Dakota next Tuesday at 8 p.m.
Iowa lifts the lid with first-team preseason All-Big Ten forward Payton Sandfort leading the way. The senior averaged a team-high 16.4 points and 6.6 rebounds last season and recorded the first triple-double in program history.
Texas A&M-Commerce is in its third season of Division I after a pair of 13-20 years. Commerce, Texas is 60 miles northeast of Dallas.
The Lions have none of their top six scorers back from last season’s team. Eight of their players are transfers from junior colleges. They were picked to finish tied for 10th in the 12-team Southland Conference, with the voting done by league coaches and sports information directors.
TAMUC is 360th in the Kenpom.com rankings. There are 364 Division I teams.
