FORT DODGE — Everything got a bit fuzzy for Matthew Schaul as he approached the finish line.
“I started to blur out in the last 250 (meters),” he said. “I was thinking, ‘Give everything, everything.’ It was rough.”
It was worth it.
A senior at Maquoketa Valley, Schaul earned third place in the Class 1A boys’ race at the state cross country meet Saturday morning at Lakeside Golf Course.
“I gave everything I had,” Schaul said. “Last year, I ran 16:16, so I was (10) seconds faster today. That pace was the fastest I’ve ever been.”
Gavin Grunvold of North Iowa won the race in 15 minutes, 57 seconds. Then it was Gunner Wagner of Woodbine (16:05), Schaul (16:06) and English Valleys’ Gage Heyne (16:08) in a scramble for second.
“Gavin ran a gutsy race,” Schaul said. “He took it out hard. My coach wanted me to go right with him and Gage, but I think my best move was to stay back and hope that one of them would come back to me.”
Through all of the collapsed bodies in the area immediately beyond the finish line, Schaul eventually located Heyne, and the two shared a brief embrace.
“I probably would have preferred a pace a little slower,” Heyne said. “I ended up dying at about 2 miles.”
Maybe, but he reclaimed his groove down the stretch.
“It was the last 500 meters of the season,” Heyne said. “I kind of got a second wind.”
Lake Mills repeated as 1A boys team champion. The Bulldogs placed three runners in the top 15 and scored 88 points. Ankeny Christian (132) and Woodbine (144) were the other trophy teams.
Earlham’s girls out-balanced defending champion Madrid and won their second title in three years. The Cardinals posted 91 points, the Tigers 109. Treynor (172) was third.
Lili Denton, a junior at Council Bluffs St. Albert, set a 1A girls’ state-meet record with an effort of 17:59.
Lauren Krogmann of Starmont, Marie Yoder of Hillcrest Academy and Hallie Kelchen of Cascade were seventh, eighth and 10th, respectively.
