Cedar Rapids man dies one week after crash

CEDAR RAPIDS — A Cedar Rapids man has died a week after he was hit by a vehicle while crossing the street, according to the Cedar Rapids Police Department.
Gary Happel, 72, was crossing First Avenue at the intersection with Cottage Grove Avenue SE and 21st Street NE on Oct. 16 when he was hit. He was taken to the hospital with serious injuries and died Oct. 24.
The driver of the vehicle, Curtis Kelley, 31, of Cedar Rapids, was charged with failure to yield the right of way to a pedestrian, according to the police department.
