Iowa City High 42, 5A No. 2 Bettendorf 23
Iowa City High got the signature win it needed. Dawson Kahl ran for 129 yards and four touchdowns in the Little Hawks’ 42-23 upset of 5A No. 2 Bettendorf.
“It tells everybody in our locker room and gives us confidence that, ‘Hey, we belong in this top echelon of teams,’” fourth-year City High Coach Mitchell Moore said. “There are a lot of good teams. There is a lot of parity out there right now in 5A football. And if this was the No. 1 team and the 8-0 team, we certainly belong on the field with them.”
City High broke the game open with three touchdowns in the second quarter. Facing a fourth down and goal to go at the Bettendorf 3-yard-line and just nine seconds until halftime, Moore elected to try for the touchdown. City High senior quarterback Bobby Bacon threw to senior tight end Parker Sutherland, who used every inch of his 6-foot-7 frame to stretch the ball across the goal line for a 28-10 halftime lead.
Bacon threw for 260 yards and two touchdowns, including a 49-yard strike to sophomore Chayse Newton. Kahl helped put the game away with touchdown runs of 23 and 6 yards in the fourth quarter.
Sutherland caught six passes for 89 yards, while 5-foot-6 tailback Gabe Egeland added 83 rushing yards.
City High defensive linemen Kane Willey and Raphael Etuma each registered sacks and Peter Pufall and Iyon Harris both collected interceptions for the Little Hawks’ defense, which yielded just nine first downs and 227 total yards to the Bettendorf offense.

5A No. 6 Iowa City Liberty 70, Cedar Rapids Jefferson 33
Reece Rettig threw four touchdown passes and ran for another as Iowa City Liberty (8-1) downed the J-Hawks (5-4) at Kingston Stadium to lock up the No. 1 seed in the Class 5A playoffs.
Bettendorf's loss to Iowa City High assured Scott Chandler's team the top spot in the RPI rankings.
Rettig threw for 285 yards. Cedar Rapids Jefferson quarterback Vernon Benda passed for 267 yards.

Cedar Rapids Prairie 28, Iowa City West 21
Prairie rushed for 327 yards in the regular-season finale at John Wall Field. This game was won up front, so give mega props to the big uglies, as they call them, guys who never get any glory.
That’d be Roby Swartzendruber, fellow tackle Javen Donald, guards Justin Velky and Jace Tonne, center Aiden Packard, fullback Brandon Brune and tight ends David Fason and Bennett Koch. Those guys imposed their will.
Brune had a touchdown run, tailback Quinton Alexander two. Fason caught a 57-yard touchdown pass from Wyatt Eash, as Prairie (4-5) rolled to a 21-0 halftime lead and hung on.
“We thought we could be more physical than them,” said Prairie Coach Kyle Knock. “Then also you talk about taking the football out of their hands. When you can run six or seven minutes off the clock …”
Time of possession was dominated by the Hawks, keeping a high-octane West offense averaging 43.6 points off the field.
Alexander finished with 93 yards on 15 carries. BJay Bush Jr. led the way with 125 yards on 14 carries, with Talan Jackson adding 65 on 11 carries.
Butali Butali had 128 yards rushing and a touchdown for West (5-4). Quarterback Jack Wallace completed 16 of 21 passes for 139 yards, running for a score.
The Trojans also ran back a blocked punt for a score. They played much of the game without leading receiver Mason Woods, who injured his leg in a game last week.

4A No. 10 Cedar Rapids Xavier 49, Burlington 6
It was an opportunity to get right before playoff time for Cedar Rapids Xavier.
The Saints made the most of it. Class 4A No. 10 Xavier (6-3, 4-1) put the throttle down in their District 3 finale against Burlington (2-7, 0-5).
Carter Hoffmann carried the ball eight times for 72 yards and two scores.
Xavier held Burlington to 133 yards of total offense.

3A No. 8 Benton Community 21, 3A No. 1 Williamsburg 0
If you’re sleeping on Benton Community, quit hitting the snooze button and open your eyes.
The Bobcats are a tough, hard-nosed football team that’s making a habit of humbling highly-ranked teams. For the second time this season, they have knocked off a top-ranked opponent.
Benton produced a stingy defense and Dylan Lefebvere rushed for three touchdowns, including two in the final 3:24, to drop No. 1 Williamsburg, 21-0, and claim the Class 3A District 5 title Friday night at home.
“It was a great opportunity, great team win,” Lefebvere said. “Coaches really pushed us this week. We wanted to win this. We want to be district champions. All of us wanted this all year long.”

5A No. 10 Ankeny 56, Cedar Rapids Washington 0
Having to make a second trip to Cedar Rapids in as many days did nothing to slow down the Ankeny football team.
After continuous lightning strikes on Thursday night forced the Hawks and Cedar Rapids Washington to put a halt to play after playing just over four minutes at Kingston Stadium, Ankeny wasted little time in taking control. The Hawks scored just four plays after the resumption of play and never looked back.
Ankeny (5-4) came into the week with the No. 12 RPI ranking in Class 5A and may have done enough to earn a home playoff game when the pairings are released.
The Warriors finish at 3-6 in Eric Addy's first year at the helm.
On the final play Thursday, Ankeny had broken off a big run to get into position. It appeared that the Warriors had received a break when Caden Henkes fumbled shy of the goal line, but Hawks offensive lineman Zach Breitbach jumped on the ball for the first score.
It was all Ankeny from that point on. Coach Jeff Bauer's team scored three times in the second quarter, the final one coming on a 68-yard return off a blocked field goal. Riley McFadden scooped up the ball and took it in on the final play of the first half, giving the visitors a 28-0 lead.
Henkes scored early in the third on a 3-yard run to start the continuous clock.
Ankeny rushed the ball 33 times for 321 yards. The Hawks defense, which got a 35-yard interception return for a score from Samuel Sandvig in the third quarter, held the Warriors to 117 total yards.

Tyler Knight rushed for 146 yards and two TDs for the Stormin’ Pointrs. Jackson Brincks completed 7 of 13 passes for 102 yards and also scored on a 5-yard run for CPU.
4A No. 3 Decorah 45, Waterloo East 10

Decorah opened the scoring on a 34-yard pass from Tanner Cadell to Tom Sexton. Kuennen then scored on a 74-yard run to give the Vikings a 13-0 lead.
Kuennen added a 2-yard TD run to make it 21-3 at halftime.
Brayden Wemark kicked a 31-yard field goal and Groux later added a 2-yard TD run late in the game.
