Herbert “Herb” Loops, 78, of North Liberty passed away on October 20, 2024.
Memorial Mass will be held Friday, October 25, 2024 at 10:00 AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City, where his family will greet friends from 9:00 – 10:00 AM. A luncheon will be held after Mass downstairs in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to his family to be distributed to organizations important to Herb.
Herbert was born on November 14, 1945, in Camden, New Jersey to Rosemary Foquet. He was adopted by his uncle and aunt Sherwood and Gloria (Cicero) Loops at the age of 4. His family lived on the Iowa Regular Baptist Campground located on the north shore of Clear Lake in Ventura, Iowa. He graduated from Ventura High School. He attended Cedarville College in Ohio for a year then attended the University of Iowa. He married Carolyn Spilman in 1968 and together they had two sons, Jeremy and Adam before they divorced.
Herb married Mary Reif on October 12, 1985 in Dodgeville, Iowa. They had two daughters, Marita and Rosalina.
After college, Herb began working for Montgomery Ward, then became an insurance agent with Horace Mann. He went to work as a general manager for KCJJ radio in the station’s early days. He became a partner in owning several Country Kitchen restaurants and in 1988 purchased the restaurant franchise for the state of Iowa and part of Nebraska.
Herb loved sports, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes. He enjoyed being on or near the water for boating and fishing. He was a member of the St. Mary’s Choir. Herb deeply loved his family and cherished the time spent with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Mary Loops, son Adam (Natalie) Loops, two daughters Marita Loops and Rosalina Loops, two grandsons Jackson and Alex Loops, three granddaughters Isabella Astleford, Leila and Juniper Loops, two brothers Donald (Teresa) Loops and David Loops.
Herb was preceded in death by his parents, and son Jeremy Loops.
