John Henry Stien, 73, passed away suddenly on Thursday, Dec. 7, 2017, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12, at St. Paul Catholic Church in Newhall, with the Rev. Craig Steimel as celebrant. Interment will be held at St. Michael Cemetery in Norway with graveside military rites by the John Ward McGranahan American Legion Post 167 and Iowa Military Honors. Visitation will be held at St. Paul Church in Newhall from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 11.
John was born March 22, 1944, in Cedar Rapids to Delbert and Hazel (Schmidt) Stien. He graduated from Newhall High School in 1961 and served in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1965 through 1971. On April 3, 1971, he was united in marriage to Joan Marie McCoy at St. Paul Catholic Church in Newhall. John was proud to be a fifth-generation farmer in the Newhall area and retired in 2015. He also was employed by FMC until its closing. He was a lifelong member of St. Paul Catholic Church and a member of the John Ward McGranahan American Legion Post. He loved farming and spending time with his grandchildren. John and Joan also enjoyed traveling.
John is survived by his wife, Joan; his children, Darrell Stien of Newhall and Janelle (Jonathan) Price of Phoenix, Ariz.; his grandchildren, Tori Stien and Alexandra, Isaac and Isaiah Price; his sister, Jean Stien of Scottsdale, Ariz.; his sister-in-law, Karen (Bruce) Rhoads; his brothers-in-law, Mick (Judi) McCoy, Joe (Verlene) McCoy and Charles (Tina) McCoy; his aunt, Edna Stien; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
John was preceded in death by his parents; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Burton and Helen McCoy.
