Michael Carmody, 81, of Osage, passed away Monday, Oct. 9, 2017. A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 13, at the Columbus Club of Osage with Father Raymond Burkle officiating. Inurnment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery with military honors conducted by Osage VFW Post 7920. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with a Knights of Columbus rosary at 7 p.m.
Michael was born on May 1, 1936, in Marshalltown, the son of David and Helen (Keenan) Carmody. He attended Dowling Catholic High School in Des Moines and acquired his electrical engineering degree from Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. Michael served in the U.S. Air Force from 1956 to 1959. Michael was united in marriage to Mary Anne Schmitz on Aug. 5, 1961, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Urbana. To this union, five children were born. He worked for Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids and then moved to New Jersey, where he worked for the Department of the Army as an electrical engineer at the Picatinny Arsenal in Dover. After retirement, he moved to Osage in 1993. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, where he had been the treasurer since 1993.
Michael is survived by his children, Kathy (Jack) Slinker of Indianola, David (Jacqueline) Carmody of Cedar Rapids, Dennis (Deb) Carmody of Center Point, John (Debra) Carmody of King George, Va., and Trish (Jeremy) Owen of Grimes; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Jo (Robert) Monfore of Wagner, S.D., and Rosalie Boozell of Mason City; and two brothers, Patrick (Jane) Carmody of Brooklyn, N.Y., and James (Debbie) Carmody of Ankeny.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Anne, in 2015; one sister, Margaret Carmody; two brothers, David Carmody and Steve Carmody; and brother-in-law, Vince Boozell.
