The Gazette’s Week 8 Iowa high school football roundup with Friday night’s statewide scores and complete coverage of area games.
5A No. 7 Linn-Mar 28, 5A No. 9 Iowa City High 27
Sophomore running back Dawson Kahl plunged into the end zone to make it a one-point game, and there was zero doubt ninth-ranked Iowa City High (5-3) would take a shot at the win. They’d done it twice before this fall, scoring a TD in the final seconds and getting the two-point conversion to beat Cedar Rapids Kennedy and Iowa City West.
This one was a fumbled exchange on a reverse play. No good on the attempt and a 28-27 Lions victory.
“I knew the whole way,” said Linn-Mar running back Dylan Muszynski. “I was on a knee, but I had to watch. Pure excitement. I knew my guys on the defensive side were going to do the job.”
Muszynski had just three touches last week in a blowout Linn-Mar win but made up for it here, carrying it 26 times for 172 yards and a touchdown. He also caught a pass in the flat and ran for 44 yards.
Linn-Mar quarterback Austin Waller was brilliant, running for two touchdowns and throwing for another while completing 10 of 15 passes to seven different receivers.
Kahl ran 31 times for 172 yards for City High. Quarterback Bobby Bacon threw for 159 yards on 12-of-16 passing.
Waller’s 1-yard TD gave Linn-Mar a 28-21 lead, with City High taking over at its 23 with 3:55 to go. Eleven plays later, and the Little Hawks had covered the 77 yards.

Iowa City West 49, 5A No. 4 Pleasant Valley 35
Iowa City West quarterback Jack Wallace has been a four-year starter and owns the school’s career passing record. He may have saved his best for the last regular-season home game.
Wallace passed for five touchdowns and rushed for two more, powering the Trojans to a mammoth 49-35 upset over Class 5A No. 4 Pleasant Valley Friday night at Trojan Field.
“That felt amazing,” Wallace said. “Coming into this week, we knew we were capable of that but to do it on the field that feels great.”
Wallace sliced and diced the Spartans secondary, completing 22 of 27 passes for 374 yards. He also rushed for 66 yards, giving him 440 total yards of offense.
On the first play of the third quarter, Mason Woods hauled in a pass on the near sideline, fought off a couple Spartans defenders and then broke free and bolted for an 80-yard TD 35-7 lead. Woods finished with 10 catches for 213 yards.

Clear Creek Amana 28, 4A No. 6 Cedar Rapids Xavier 24
The Cardiac Clippers remain alive in Class 4A. The win pushes CCA (5-3, 3-1 District 3) even in the district race with both North Scott and Xavier.
CCA junior quarterback Conlan Poynton delivered when his team needed him most. The former tailback threw for 241 yards and a pair of touchdowns, both in the final frame. His 11-yard scoring toss to Cale Berry with 1:02 to go gave his team the lead for good.
The score capped a CCA rally that started with a 17-7 halftime deficit. Senior Clayton Isham recovered a blocked punt in the end zone to pull the Clippers within a field goal with six minutes left in the third quarter, while senior Owen Rosenberg intercepted a Xavier pass at the goal line late in the frame.
Rosenberg clinched the upset with a second interception in the closing seconds.
“We believed,” first-year CCA Coach Lance Pedersen said. “I don’t think a lot of people coming into this football game thought we had a chance. They were writing us off and our guys believed. They just kept fighting and battling and fighting and battling. I was so dang proud of them.”

Anamosa 41, 2A No. 7 Northeast 0
Anamosa stuffed No. 7 Northeast on a pair of first-and-goal situations in the first half, held the Rebels to minus-8 yards in the second half, and went on to emphatically claim the Class 2A District 4 championship at Downing Field in Anamosa.
Austin Scranton rushed for 138 yards and three touchdowns for Anamosa (7-1, 4-1).
The Raiders outgained the Rebels by a 355-83 margin. Vince Diers completed 14 of 18 passes for 135 yards.

Cedar Falls 28, Cedar Rapids Kennedy 7
It was elimination Friday with Cedar Falls and Kennedy in desperate need of a win to keep. The Tigers move on to the season’s final game with playoff hopes intact.
Kennedy jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, traveling 87 yards on 12 plays during its opening possession.
But the Cougars (2-6) could not get the running game going and were hampered by penalties and a big-play Cedar Falls (4-4) offense. Jacob Doyle’s 50-yard screen reception for a touchdown was wiped off the board on a holding penalty.
Cedar Falls took a 14-7 lead to the half.
The Tigers racked up 358 yards of offense, led by Davarrion Clark’s 127 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Vinni Gianforte was efficient for Kennedy, completing 18 of 22 passes for 227 yards.
The Cougars wrap up their season next week at Davenport North.
