Leo (William) Sheumaker, 102, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, formerly of Centerville, passed away Monday, Dec. 25, 2017, at his home.
He was born July 2, 1915, in Davis County, Iowa, the son of Oscar and Della (Fortune) Sheumaker. Leo was united in marriage to Lorrene Lamb on March 18, 1939, in Lancaster, Mo. The couple celebrated 74 wonderful years of marriage together until Lorrene's passing on Oct. 16, 2013.
In 1951, Leo opened Sheumaker Repair and Hardware in Centerville, Iowa. Dedicated to his business for several decades, Leo sold, repaired and sharpened lawn mowers and chain saws. He also sold many wood stoves throughout his years of ownership. Leo retired from his business in the early 1990s.
He enjoyed several hobbies throughout his lifetime, including traveling with his wife, Lorrene, to visit family members, especially trips to visit the grandchildren. Leo also enjoyed woodworking in his retirement.
Leo possessed a strong affiliation with the Church of the Nazarene in Centerville.
He is survived by his daughter, Sharon (Floyd) Sandford of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; five grandchildren, Susan Sandford, Steph Cherrywell, Christine Sheumaker, Sharon Sheumaker and Jamie Sheumaker; 10 great-grandchildren; as well as eight nephews and two nieces.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lorrene; two children, Jim Sheumaker and Arden Carl Sheumaker; five siblings, Mary Brunk, Anabelle Sheumaker, Don Sheumaker, Dale Sheumaker and Deo Sheumaker; three nieces; and one nephew.
A visitation will take place from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 30, at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville. Burial will follow in West Grove Cemetery.
Memorials have been established to either the Alzheimer's Association or the American Cancer Society and may be mailed to Lange Funeral Home and Crematory, 1900 S. 18th St., Centerville, IA 52544.
