The store manager of an Iowa City Jimmy John’s was arrested last week on a charge of second-degree fraudulent practice after she lost more than $8,000 that belonged to the restaurant and tried to cover it up, authorities said.
Jillian Marie Begg, 45, of Coralville, told police she lost the money in early June when she left it in her car overnight, a criminal complaint states.
The owner of the Jimmy John’s at 2569 N Dodge St. in Iowa City noticed that $8,468.04 was missing when he conducted a routine audit on Aug. 14. He called Begg, and she admitted to him and later to police that she had lost the money, the complaint states.
She told police she hadn’t been making daily deposits during May. At the beginning of June, she bagged up all the money for the May deposits with the intention of bringing it to the bank. She put the money in the back of her car and forgot about it. She stopped at a couple stores after leaving work, and then went home for the night, leaving the money in her vehicle.
When she got up the next day, she remembered the deposits, but realized the money was no longer in her car. She said she believes it was stolen. There was no evidence of forced entry on the vehicle, but she said she found out her power locks weren’t working, the complaint states.
She then tried to conceal the loss by changing the dates on daily deposits in July and August to try to cover the losses in May, the complaint states.
Begg was arrested Friday and had her first appearance in court. She was released from jail on her own recognizance.
