The Gazette’s Week 6 Iowa high school football roundup with Friday night’s statewide scores and complete coverage of area games.
4A No. 8 Cedar Rapids Xavier 28, 4A No. 7 North Scott 21
At Eldridge, Carter Hoffmann's 8-yard TD run midway through the fourth quarter broke a 21-21 tie, giving No. 8 Xavier (4-2, 2-0 Class 4A District 3) the win over No. 7 North Scott (4-2, 1-1).
Hoffmann finished with 122 yards on 24 carries. He also threw a TD pass to Cash Parks in the first half on a trick play. Parks, playing for the first time in three games after being in an auto accident, completed 15 of 22 passes for 185 yards and also had a 40-yard TD run.
Ryan Kelly had nine catches for 101 yards for Xavier.
Parks was starting over after missing the last three Saints games after being involved in an auto accident.
“These guys were around me and rallied with me the whole time,” Parks said. “I felt great out there tonight. My teammates really helped me to keep my head up if I made any mistakes. I got a little tired out there, but these guys kept lifting me up all the way.”

Benton Community 21, 3A No. 1 Solon 20
Benton Community leaned on its running game until it was time to take a shot downfield.
It was a shot they’ll be talking about in Van Horne for some time.
“Just ran my route and did what I was supposed to do,” Benton senior receiver Logan Upah said after his 66-yard touchdown reception with 1:10 left in the game helped the Bobcats upset Class 3A No. 1 Solon, 21-20, in a District 5 cliffhanger Friday night at Benton Community High School. “Safety dropped, threw a perfect ball. Can’t ask for anything better than that.”
The touchdown capped a frenetic fourth-quarter sequence that began with the Benton defense registering a fourth-down stop at its own 1-yard line to preserve a 14-12 lead with 5:10 to go.
Solon appeared to be on the verge of keeping its unbeaten record intact when it recovered a fourth-down fumble at the Benton 26-yard line with 2:29 left. Two plays later, an 18-yard touchdown run by senior Eddie Johnson — on just his second rushing attempt of the game due to injury — put the Spartans up, 20-14.
“We told them, ‘Stay composed, go down and score,’” Zittergruen said. “We were able to do that.”

5A No. 8 Iowa City Liberty 27, Cedar Rapids Washington 22
Sutton Koller, Iowa City Liberty’s leading touchdown scorer, is banged up and was held out of competition here.
That just gave some other guys an opportunity to show what they can do. Like Dallas Miller, the explosive receiver who had two touchdown catches. Like Collin Decker, who’s a big target at 6-foot-3. He had a TD catch.
Like Jordan Schroeder, who took over Koller’s spot in the lineup as a back-receiver combo. He also caught a touchdown.
“We’ve got guys on the outside that can really play,” Liberty Coach Scott Chandler said. “We haven’t had the opportunity to get them the ball as much as I’d like to. They made a few plays tonight. I’d like them to be involved more. The more guys we have that can make plays, the tougher we are to defend.”
Quarterback Reece Rettig completed 20 of 30 passes for 251 yards and four scores as Class 5A seventh-ranked Liberty improved to 5-1.
The Lightning overcame a 16-14 halftime deficit to a team from Cedar Rapids Washington (2-4) that continues to show growth under first-year head coach Eric Addy.
Quarterback Grady McGuire threw for 123 yards and rushed for 56 for the Warriors.

Iowa City West 48, Cedar Rapids Jefferson 6
You knew Iowa City West could score, and score a lot.
On this night, the Trojans proved they could stop an opponent. Or at least slow it down.
“Our defense stepped up tonight,” quarterback Jack Wallace said after West smashed Cedar Rapids Jefferson, 48-6, in a Class 5A football battle Friday night at Trojan Field.
“They’ve been called to step up. They got in the quarterback’s face and forced some interceptions. This was a full team effort.”
Wallace broke the West single-game record with six touchdown passes, completing 11 of 14 throws for 271 yards (and one interception).
The Trojans (3-3) surrendered just 157 yards and blanked the J-Hawks (4-2) for the final 46 minutes.

Iowa City High 49, Davenport Central 7
Iowa City High opted to forgo the drama this week.
After winning with late 2-point conversions the last two weeks, the Little Hawks (4-2) dominated Davenport Central (2-4) at Bates Field for their fourth straight win.
Sophomore Dawson Kahl led the way for City High, carrying the ball 13 times for 156 yards and three touchdowns, all in the first half. Bobby Bacon added three TDs through the air.
“It’s definitely nice to be back at home on Homecoming and just give the people who came out to support us a nice, comfortable win,” Bacon said. “It was great to get a big lead and ride it out. That’s what we want to continue to do in the future.”

1A No. 6 Iowa City Regina 28, West Branch 10
Wide receiver Drew Greve hit quarterback Kyle Tracy on a 43-yard touchdown pass with 13 seconds before halftime and Class 1A No. 6 Regina dominated after the break, topping the Bears for the first time since 2021.
The Regals emerged from a timeout and conjured the magic play. Tracy tossed a backward pass to his left across the field to Greve, who looked downfield and then returned it to Tracy. A wall was set up for Tracy and he split two defenders to get into the end zone, making it 14-10 at the half.
Tracy finished with 179 yards passing, including an 8-yard pass to Greve to open the scoring.
Regina’s defense stymied the Bears for the last two quarters, allowing no points and just three first downs.
“It’s been two years for these guys,” Regina Coach Dustin Elsbury said. “I know they really wanted to get this one this year. I’m so proud of them, the work they put in and the leadership they’ve had this year.
“To be able to respond and come back in the second half and make some big plays, it’s just a gritty win for these guys.”
