Steve was born Sept. 29, 1953, in Guthrie Center, the son of George and Margaret Cooper Faga. He was a 1971 graduate of Adair Casey High School and was subsequently employed by the Iowa DOT in Fairfield. On June 15, 1974, Steve married Marla McDowell.
Steve and Marla moved to Victor in 1978, where Steve was employed by Manatt's. Steve then worked for the city of Iowa City as a building inspector for many years. In 1997, he established Steve's House Garden and Lawn Care, which operated out of Iowa City.
Steve had a passion for basketball and he taught children how to love and play the sport. He coached junior high girls and varsity boys basketball at Clear Creek Amana and English Valley, respectively. Family gatherings were not complete without a game of basketball. He was an avid Hawkeye fan, loyally following Hawkeye football and basketball, as well as Chicago Cubs baseball. Steve also had a love and appreciation for music. He enjoyed singing with his children when they were younger and always was humming a tune.
Steve was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, where he taught Sunday school, was involved in Bible study, and served on numerous church committees. His faith in God was spread to all those he touched.
Steve is survived by his wife, Marla; and their five children, Angela (Troy) Mysak of Cedar Rapids, Melissa (Curt) Schmidt of Kailua, Hawaii, Teresa (Chris) Donaldson of Sula, Mont., Andrew Faga and Devann Horras of Victor and Jonathan (Tessa) Faga of Iowa City; 10 grandchildren; three siblings, Barry (Barb) Faga of Dundee, Ill., Sue (Larry) Thornton of Council Bluffs and Joel (Debora) Faga of Carson; eight nieces and nephews; and his beloved granddog, Kona.
