CEDAR RAPIDS — More than a month after a motorcyclist was killed in a southwest Cedar Rapids crash, the driver of a sport utility vehicle police said cut in front of him was booked Wednesday into the Linn County Jail on homicide by vehicle and drunken driving charges.
Spenser Michael Kann, 30, faces charges of homicide by vehicle — operating under the influence, and OWI second offense. He also faces citations for having an open alcohol container and failure to yield.
Cedar Rapids police said Kann was driving an SUV at 10:17 p.m. Aug. 21 when he turned left in front on an oncoming motorcycle at the intersection of Sixth Street SW and Wilson Avenue SW. Motorcyclist Nicholas Cox, 44, of Cedar Rapids, was transported to a hospital but later died.
A criminal complaint detailing the charges against Kann was not available Wednesday night. Court records show that a warrant in the open container case was requested Sept. 11.
According to an obituary, Cox was married and the father of two sons. He worked at General Mills in Cedar Rapids and enjoyed riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle, the obituary said.
