Change Iowa’s abortion ban at the ballot box

Iowa’s 6-week abortion ban sets a troubling precedent for those who need abortion care. Although the ban includes a medical emergency exemption, it fails to clearly define what qualifies as an emergency. This uncertainty forces providers to deny care to avoid up to $10,000 in fines and possible loss of their medical license. Tragically, this results in preventable maternal deaths because individuals lack access to this lifesaving health care. Iowa’s maternal mortality rate is expected to rise, particularly affecting people of color who already face significant barriers to reproductive and sexual health care.
Despite 61% of Iowans supporting legal abortion in most or all cases, our elected officials are not listening. This November, we have the opportunity to make change at the ballot box. We need representatives who will advocate for a better Iowa — one where health care access is not hindered by political interference. Regardless of personal beliefs, we can all agree that everyone deserves the right to make health care decisions that are best for themselves, their families, and their future. Let’s make sure our voices are heard and fight for the right to choose and access the lifesaving health care we need and deserve.
