Cedar Rapids man cited in high-speed crash in Marion

Sep. 17, 2024 12:10 pm
A Cedar Rapids man who police say was driving 116 mph on Highway 100 through Marion last month before crashing broadside into a minivan — injuring the driver — now faces multiple traffic citations.
Rickey Brooks, 38, was cited with excessive speed, driving with a suspended license, reckless driving and failure to provide proof of insurance.
On Aug. 20, Brooks was driving a purple 2010 Dodge Challenger west on Highway 100. He was traveling about 116 mph in a 55 mph zone as he approached 44th Street in Marion, according to a news release from the Marion Police Department.
At the same time, Walker Kelly, 77, of Marion, was driving a dark blue 2021 Toyota Sienna minivan. Kelly was heading south on 44th Street and went to make a left-hand turn onto Highway 100. He didn’t realize how fast Brooks was driving and thought he had time to make the turn — but he was struck broadside by the Dodge Challenger.
Brooks had slowed to about 90 mph by the time of impact. Both vehicles were totaled and both men were transported by ambulance to a hospital. There were no passengers in either car, and no other vehicles were involved in the crash, according to the release.
The release does not state the extent of either man’s injuries, but does say they have both been released from a hospital.
Charges were filed against Brooks over the weekend after “a lengthy investigation with assistance form the Linn County Sheriff’s Office” according to the release.
