CEDAR RAPIDS — Two people were hospitalized Tuesday morning after being rescued from a fire in a Cedar Rapids residence, according to the Cedar Rapids Fire Department.
Firefighters and police officers were called at 1:10 a.m. to the fire in a multifamily home in the 200 block of Park Court SE. Police officers arrived first and began helping someone having difficulty evacuate the building.
When firefighters arrived, they searched the building and found another person who needed help evacuating the building. Both occupants were treated on-scene and then taken to a hospital with injuries that officials believe are not life-threatening, a news release states.
The fire was extinguished and brought under control by 1:50 a.m. It was contained mostly to one unit and was determined to be unintentional, according to the release.
Firefighters also located nine cats and one dog during fighting the fire. The animals were taken in by Cedar Rapids Animal Care & Control and a few of them were being treated for smoke inhalation, according to the fire department.
