CEDAR RAPIDS — After seeing the African American Museum of Iowa through a multimillion-dollar renovation that re-imagined the building and the organization’s scope throughout the state, Executive Director LaNisha Cassell will leave this fall to embark on a new career venture in Pennsylvania.
The move will take the Washington, D.C., native and her family back to her East Coast roots, as she becomes executive director of Voices Underground in Kennett Square, Pa. That organization’s mission is “to promote racial healing by elevating the story of the Underground Railroad through scholarly research, creative experiences, and historical memorialization.”
Her last day with the African American Museum of Iowa in Cedar Rapids will be Oct. 7, after its annual History Makers Gala.
In her nine years with the museum, the organization “has seen significant growth in its programs, exhibitions and statewide outreach initiatives,” the board of directors noted in announcing her departure. “She played a pivotal role in enhancing the museum’s visibility, increasing visitor engagement, and securing vital funding that has ensured the sustainability of the institution.”
“We are deeply grateful for LaNisha’s visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to the museum’s mission,” board president Abena Sankofa Imhotep added.
The search for a new executive director is underway. Sankofa Imhotep and board Vice President Anthony Betters Jr. will guide the museum through the transition. Deputy Director Brianna Kim will continue with the museum’s day-to-day operations and assist in the new director’s transition, as well.
“I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished together at the African American Museum of Iowa,” Cassell said in a prepared statement. “It has been an honor to serve the communities reached by the museum’s resources and to work alongside such a dedicated and passionate team and board. While I am excited about this new chapter in my career, I will always cherish my time at the museum and the relationships I have built here.”
A farewell reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 24 at the museum, 55 12th Ave. SE, Cedar Rapids. The public is invited to meet with Cassell, her husband, longtime community leader Karl Cassell, and their family.
