Here is the 2024 Iowa football schedule with kickoff times (all CT), TV channels and streaming options, plus notes about each opponent from The Gazette’s John Steppe.
Aug. 31: Illinois State
Time: 11 a.m.
TV: BTN (FoxSports.com streaming)
Series: Iowa leads, 1-0, a 31-14 win in 2015.
Prognosis: Iowa has not lost to an FCS opponent since 2016. That is unlikely to change this year against the Redbirds. — John Steppe
Early preview: Illinois State has exceeded 6 wins only once since 2016
Sept. 7: Iowa State
Time: 2:30 p.m.
TV: CBS (CBSsports.com streaming)
Series: Iowa leads, 47-23, including a 20-13 win last season.
Prognosis: Iowa will likely be the favorite in this one, but with all of Iowa State’s returning production, overlook the Cyclones at your own risk. — John Steppe
Early preview: Iowa State is expected to return 18 out of 22 starters on offense and defense
Sept. 14: Troy
Time: 3 p.m.
TV: FS1 (FoxSports.com streaming)
Series: First meeting.
Prognosis: Troy might have been a fear-inducing opponent in 2022 or 2023. But 2024 is a much different story. This will be a nice tuneup opportunity for the Hawkeyes. — John Steppe
Early preview: Troy is in clear rebuilding mode after losing its head coach and most of its starters
Sept. 21: at Minnesota
Time: TBA
TV: TBA
Big Ten preseason poll: 12th
Series: Minnesota leads, 63-52-2, including a 12-10 win last season.
Prognosis: This year’s renewal of the Floyd of Rosedale rivalry may elevate Hawkeye fans’ heart rates again, but Iowa is the better team and should be taking Floyd back to Iowa City. — John Steppe
Early preview: Minnesota does not have high preseason expectations
Oct. 5: at No. 2 Ohio State
Time: TBA
TV: TBA
Big Ten preseason poll: First
Series: Ohio State leads, 48-15-3, including a 54-10 win in 2022.
Prognosis: Ohio State again comfortably resides in the top tier of college football. Essentially everything would have to go right for the Hawkeyes to have a shot at an upset in Columbus. — John Steppe
Early preview: Ohio State is widely projected to be a top-five team in 2024
Oct. 12: Washington
Time: TBA
TV: TBA
Big Ten preseason poll: 10th
Series: Tied, 3-3. Iowa won the last meeting, 38-18, in the 1995 Sun Bowl.
Prognosis: This Washington team is capable, but not the same caliber as last year’s team that went to the national championship game. — John Steppe
Early preview: It’s a new era for Washington, with a new conference, a new coach and a new quarterback
Oct. 19: at Michigan State
Time: TBA
TV: TBA
Big Ten preseason poll: 16th
Series: Iowa leads, 25-22-2, including a 26-16 win last season.
Prognosis: Michigan State could quite possibly still be without a Big Ten win at this point in the year. That’s unlikely to change against the Hawkeyes on Oct. 19. — John Steppe
Early preview: Michigan State experiences heavy roster turnover as Jonathan Smith begins his tenure
Oct. 26: Northwestern
Time: 2:30 p.m.
TV: TBA
Big Ten preseason poll: 14th
Series: Iowa leads, 54-28-3, including a 10-7 win last season.
Prognosis: Iowa certainly has the advantage on paper although Northwestern has a history of being a pesky opponent for the Hawkeyes. — John Steppe
Early preview: David Braun, the 2023 Big Ten Coach of the Year, will lead a group that again has low outside expectations
Nov. 2: Wisconsin
Time: TBA
TV: TBA
Big Ten preseason poll: Seventh
Series: Wisconsin leads, 49-46-2. Iowa won, 15-6, last season.
Prognosis: Iowa’s wins over Wisconsin in 2022 and 2023 were their first back-to-back wins in the Heartland Trophy series since the 2000s. Making that three in a row is certainly feasible, but not an easy task. — John Steppe
Early preview: QB Tyler Van Dyke is among Wisconsin’s transfer additions
Nov. 8 (Friday): at UCLA
Time: 8 p.m.
TV: Fox (FoxSports.com streaming)
Big Ten preseason poll: 15th
Series: UCLA leads, 6-3, and won the last meeting, 45-28, in the 1986 Rose Bowl.
Prognosis: As troublesome as games out west have sometimes been for the Hawkeyes historically, all signs point toward Iowa being the better team in this matchup. — John Steppe
Early preview: UCLA is going through a coaching change and a conference change
Nov. 23: at Maryland
Time: TBA
TV: TBA
Big Ten preseason poll: 11th
Series: Iowa leads, 3-1, and won the last meeting, 51-14, in 2021.
Prognosis: Will Iowa duplicate its 37-point blowout win from 2021? That’s unlikely. But this is a very winnable game for the Hawkeyes. — John Steppe
Early preview: Maryland may need new ways to win games after losing four-year starting QB Taulia Tagovailoa
Nov. 29 (Friday): Nebraska

Early preview: Five-star QB recruit Dylan Raiola joins in the second year of Matt Rhule’s rebuild
