The Gazette’s “Fab 5” area Class 2A players to watch during the 2024 Iowa high school football season.
Ryker Dengler
School: West Liberty
Grade: Senior
Positions: QB/S
Height/weight: 6-2, 165 pounds
About the player: Dengler was a bright spot in a tough 2023 season, ranking sixth in Class 2A with 125 completions. Athletic and smart with good feet, he was eighth with 1,609 passing yards, connecting on 61.9 percent of his passes. As a defender, he had 28 tackles and two fumbles. Averaged 33.7 yards per punt.
Hudson Ehrenfelt
School: Mid-Prairie
Grade: Junior
Positions: RB/DB
Height/weight: 6-0, 180
About the player: Ehrenfelt was an all-district performer and named 2A District 5 Offensive Most Valuable Player. He ranked third in 2A with 1,977 all-purpose yards as a rusher, receiver and returner. His 1,336 rush yards ranked seventh in 2A. He had 355 yards receiving and scored a total of 16 TDs.
Cael Reichter
School: North Fayette Valley
Grade: Senior
Positions: TE/DE
Height/weight: 6-7, 200
About the player: Reichter emerged as a big and reliable target last season. He ranked eighth in 2A with 658 yards and tied for 13th with 36 receptions. His 18.3 yards per catch average was good for sixth in the class. He had 49.5 tackles, including 7.5 for loss and one sack. He produced three turnovers as well.
Austin Scranton
School: Anamosa
Grade: Senior
Positions: RB/LB
Height/weight: 6-3, 195
About the player: Scranton was an all-district running back. A tough and durable back, he ranked second in Class 2A with 255 carries and eighth with 1,309 rushing yards, scoring 10 TDs. His nose for the football yielded 63 tackles, including 34 solo and 9.5 tackles for loss.
Ryan Treptow
School: Jesup
Grade: Senior
Positions: QB/DB
Height/weight: 6-3, 175
About the player: Treptow was a first-team all-district defensive back who picked off four passes and tallied 21 tackles with 17 solo stops. He compiled more than 1,400 offensive yards, passing for 767 and nine TDs and rushing for 608 and seven. He rarely left the field, averaging 38.2 per punt.
