Rising costs — for fireworks and many of the services associated with hosting a fireworks show — have prompted the Cedar Boat Club to announce the cancellation of its Ellis Harbor fireworks show in July.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources fielded a series of calls last week after dead fish were found floating in Cedar Rapids’ Ellis Harbor. A fisheries biologist with the agency said it was a naturally occurring kill that resulted in thousands of dead gizzard shad.
Boathouses on the Cedar River date back to the 1880s. Generations of families have called the buoyant neighborhood home in the summers, and enjoy boating and spending time on the river.
