Timothy James Virden, 73, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, August 16, 2024, at the Hiawatha Care Center. Service: 11 a.m., Friday, August 30, 2024, at First Presbyterian Church by Pastor Heather Hayes. Friends may visit with the family on Friday from 9 to 11 a.m. at the church.
Tim was born on November 18, 1950, in Grand Forks, North Dakota, the son of James and Fern Carlson Virden. He graduated from the University of North Dakota with a bachelor’s degree in education in 1970, and a master’s degree in education in 1972. On January 22, 1977, he married Katherine Marie Larsen in Cedar Rapids. Tim worked for over 30 years as a teacher with the Cedar Rapids Community School District.
Tim enjoyed time with his family, decorating their home with original art and unique furniture. He loved collecting art, with one of his most prized finds being an original Marvin Cone painting. In his retirement, he enjoyed oil painting, traveling, and spending time with his family. Tim was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2007, which had many ups and downs over the years.
Tim is survived by his son, David (Dana) Virden of Marion; daughter, Ann (Justin) Balvanz of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Jenna and Brody Mosnik and Boyd and Kate Balvanz; his sisters, Wendy (Dennis) Moore of Sioux Falls, SD; Polly Virden of Gilbert, AZ; Carole Virden of Oxnard, CA; Debbie (Greg) Rudolph of Bismark, ND; and many in-laws, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Katie in 2016, his parents, father-in-law and three brothers-in-law.
