Shirley Mae Matheny, 72, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa passed away on Sunday, August 4, 2024, at the Oldorf Hospice House. Per Shirley’s wishes, there will be no services.
Shirley was born on August 11, 1951, in Dubuque, Iowa to George and Agnes Scherrer. She graduated from Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids in 1968. She attended Kirkwood College then worked at the Cedar Rapids School District as a para educator working with special-needs children, whom she adored. Shirley married Tim Matheny on July 14, 1986, he later passed away on December 11, 2005. She met her significant other, Mike McDermott in 2007. She loved to read on her patio surrounded by her flowers with a cold glass of sun tea.
Shirley is survived by her children, Kelli Allbones and Jeremy (Lindsay) Whorton; grandsons, Zach Whorton, Joe (Alyssa) Seeman, and Glenn and Larson Whorton; great-grandson Wyatt Whorton; longtime significant other, Mike McDermott; stepdaughter Jessica Martin; step-grandchildren, Raven Mifflin and Luke Andrews; sisters Kathy Babcock, Georgette Hedley, and Phyllis Baskerville; and brother Jim Scherrer.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Agnes Scherrer; brother, Jack Sherrer; husband, Tim Matheny; and sister-in-law Bernice Scherrer.
The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at the Oldorf Hospice House for caring for Shirley in her final days.
In lieu of flowers, sit in the sun and read a good book in memory of Shirley.
