Sherry M. Mitchell, 68, died peacefully at The Bird House on Sunday, August 4, 2024, following a long courageous battle against cancer.
Graveside Services will be at 10 AM, Friday, August 9, 2024 at Blain Cemetery near Swisher, IA. A procession to the cemetery will begin at 9:45 AM Friday from Swisher American Legion. Visitation will be Thursday, August 8, 2024 from 4 PM to 7 PM at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to The Bird House Hospice Home, Iowa City Hospice, or to DVIP.
Sherry was born in Waverly, IA on August 3, 1956, the daughter of Clark and Leona (Larsen) Sidmore. Sherry was raised in Des Moines and was a 1974 graduate of Hoover High School.
Sherry joined Hills Bank and Trust in 2007 as a lender. In 2020 when she retired Sherry was a First Vice President and loan officer.
In high school Sherry was employed at United Federal Saving where she began as a teller. She then transferred to their Iowa City branch where she became branch manager and loan officer. Sherry was a loan officer at Mid America Savings and later worked for the John Raley Agency where she was the office manager and an insurance agent.
Sherry married Bruce Guyer and they later divorced. They had one son from the marriage, Dane Guyer. Sherry married Michael Mitchell on August 12, 2006. They have shared the last 23-plus years of life together.
Sherry was very civic and community minded. She had served on the board of Junior Achievement in Des Moines and Iowa City. Past memberships include Sertoma, Pilot Club, 100+ Women's Hawkeye Chapter and affiliate member of ICAAR. She was past treasurer for Johnson County Area Women's Networking.
Sherry enjoyed traveling, cliff jumping, snorkeling, concerts, working in her gardens and cooking. She was loyal, committed, sincere, and a confidant to many. Most important to Sherry was time spent with family and friends. For many people Sherry was their “true friend.”
Sherry is survived by her loving husband Michael Mitchell; her son, Dane Guyer (Brianna) of North Liberty; stepchildren, Len Mitchell of Swisher and Laura Sheely (Travis) of Amana; her granddaughter, Ava Guyer and step-grandson Dylan Sheely (Lena Russell); sisters and brother-in-law, Julie Richter (Jim), David Mitchell, and Jean Hoyt (Mark); former spouse, Bruce Guyer, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Sherry was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents.
