CEDAR RAPIDS — A 16-year-old has been charged in adult court in relation to a shooting — which records show was partially captured on video — that injured a 13-year-old Saturday in Cedar Rapids.
Khristopher Cortez Hoover, of Cedar Rapids, is charged with intimidation with a dangerous weapon and going armed with intent, both felonies, and being a minor armed with a dangerous weapon, a series misdemeanor.
According to a criminal complaint, Hoover had gotten into a fight with another juvenile earlier in the day Saturday. Throughout the day, he communicated with the juvenile about fighting again.
The juvenile went with several other minors to Hoover’s residence in the 1800 block of A Avenue NE just before 9 p.m., and Hoover came out armed with a handgun, the complaint said. The juvenile told Hoover to put the gun away “so they could fight with their hands,” the complaint states.
Hoover then fired several rounds toward the group, who ran away. Surveillance footage from a nearby house showed them running while Hoover followed, firing seven or eight rounds. One person, a 13-year-old, was hit in the leg and was taken to UnityPoint Health-St. Luke’s Hospital for treatment.
Hoover was arrested Saturday night at the scene. He had his first appearance in court Monday, after his case was waived to adult court by a judge. He’s being held on a $25,000 cash-only bond.
A previous news release from Cedar Rapids police incorrectly indicated the suspect, who it did not name, was 17 years old and faced additional charges that were not filed.
