Richard (“Rick”) Joseph Dvorak, 75, of Shueyville, Iowa, died Thursday, July 18, 2024, at Corridor Crossing in Cedar Rapids. Services: 1 p.m. Thursday, July 25, 2024, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery with full military honors. Friends may greet the family on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 4-7 p.m.
Born on June 27, 1949 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to his adoring parents, Donald and Mary Ann Dvorak, Rick grew up as a child with numerous friends, who enjoyed sports, hunting, fishing and fast, shiny cars. Rick graduated from Regis High school in 1967 and joined the Army and then the Reserves from 1968 to 1973. It was the love of fast, sporty cars that drew the attention of his first wife, MaryJo Rogers, when they met at a dance in Highschool. Rick and MaryJo married in 1969 and had four children together. They later divorced but remained friends. Rick met Margaret “Marti” Dvorak through their joint love of fast toys and mutual friends, and married in a fun ceremony with their best friends present on January 4, 1997, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Rick was a dedicated government employee focused on responsible land development serving Cedar and Johnson counties for 43 years. He was the Cedar County Environmentalist and Zoning Administrator for 17 years before becoming the Johnson County Planning and Zoning administrator for 26 years after which he retired in 2016.
Rick worked hard, but he really preferred and enjoyed his hobbies which included a weekly Wednesday afternoon golf league with many cherished and close friends, and participating in a bowling league, where he had a perfect game and had averaged 200 for about 10 years. The kids used to love counting all of his trophies displayed on the mantel, his first of which he got when he was 8. Rick’s and Marti’s favorite weekend pastime with their friends and Rick’s kids growing up, was to putz around the Coralville lake on the “Blown Budget.” Always chiding his kids’ “need for speed” (but enjoying it just as much) pulling up to Bohemie Beach where all his closest friends were, and blaring Shaky Ground by Etta James to let everyone know he had arrived. In the winter Rick enjoyed watching his favorite team the Kansas City Chiefs’ games, golf and hanging out with friends at the Nightlife/Dry Dock. Marti and Rick also loved to get away for weekends with friends at the Ozarks. After boating, came a rekindled love of motorcycles, Harleys in particular, with Marti often riding along. After all the years of fast rides and fun, Rick and Marti finally settled down a bit and set up camping on the river every summer where they thoroughly enjoyed quiet and relaxation for many years.
Survivors include his wife of 28 years, Margaret “Marti” Dvorak, former wife and mother of his children MaryJo Dvorak. His children TJ Dvorak of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Carrie Kronfeld of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Janie (Brian) Elliott-Tenge of New Hampton, Iowa and Molly (Dustin) Huinker of Alburnett, Iowa; his sister, Sherry (Joe Christian) Burke of Dallas, Texas; his grandchildren Christian, Colton, Caden, and Caylee Kronfeld, Allison and Tyler Dvorak, Emma and Liam Elliott, Kai Huinker; his stepgrandchildren, Kiersten, Ben and Bailee Tenge. Also Marti’s children Brad Daugherty , Mike Dougherty, Denio Clough. Grandchildren Amanda, Ryan, Jessica, Sarah, and Nick. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Kirk Dvorak, and stepson Doug Daugherty.
