Daniel Paul Ockenfels, age 86, passed away peacefully on July 18, 2024. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 24, 2024, at St. Jude Catholic Church by Rev. Mark Osterhaus. Burial: St. Patrick Cemetery, Fairfax. A rosary will be recited at 3 p.m. on Tuesday at Teahen Funeral Home. Those not attending the rosary, may visit with the family on Tuesday from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
He was born June 29, 1938, in Cedar Rapids, IA to Milford A. Ockenfels and Frances M. (Horrigan) Ockenfels. Dan was a 1957 graduate of Marion High School. After high school he was a radio operator in the Air Force. In 1968 he married Virginia A. “Ginny” Harney. They raised eight children on Dan’s family farm near Fairfax. Dan is best known for his insurance career. He began selling life insurance in 1967 starting his own firm in 1989. Dan concentrated on Life Insurance and Wealth Management in the Cedar Rapids and Benton County areas. He was a member of the Million Dollar Round Table, and obtained his LUTCF designation and other numerous awards before retiring in 2011.
Dan was a long-time member of St. Jude’s Catholic Church, and an active member of the BPO Elks Lodge #251 for 56 years. He served as Exalted Ruler, NE District Deputy and Iowa State President. He was also a member of the Fairfax American Legion, Knights of Columbus and Moose Lodge.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, playing cards, dancing, bowling and golf. He restored his 1952 pickup in three short years. Dan also ran the Quad Cities Bix 7 for 20 consecutive years. He very much enjoyed having a daughter on his 30th birthday then a granddaughter 30 years later, on his 60th birthday!
Dan is survived by his wife Ginny, children Deborah Wimberley, Kimberly Christensen, Daniel W. Ockenfels, Joan (Chris) Scheer, Barbara (Mike) West, Janet (Keith) Huebner, William (Heather) Ockenfels, Amie (Brad) Flanigan, 24 grandchildren, 2 step-grandsons and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, brother, Terry Ockenfels, grandson, Keldon Flanigan, and former wife, Carole (Sanborn) Logsdon.
