Melvin B. Matteson, 84, of Winthrop, Iowa, died suddenly at his home on Thursday afternoon, July 18, 2024.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, July 24, 2024, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Winthrop, Iowa, with Rev. David Beckman, Rev. Ivan Nienhaus, Rev. Paul McManus and Deacon Tim Post officiating. Visitation: 4:00 to 6:00 P.M. Tuesday at the Fawcett-Schmitz Funeral Home in Winthrop. Interment: St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery, Winthrop, Iowa. Melvin Bruce Matteson was born July 7, 1940, in Independence, Iowa, the son of Clifford M. & Florence L. (Polk) Matteson. He graduated from Jefferson High School, Independence, in the class of 1958. Melvin then worked in Cedar Rapids at Collins Radio. Melvin was united in marriage to Kathrynn Rose “Kay” Murphy on October 13, 1962, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Winthrop, Iowa. They lived in Cedar Rapids for five years until moving back to Winthrop in 1967. Melvin managed the Winthrop Elevator as well as farming and raising hogs at Byron Hog and Aljumekaal Farms. Melvin and Kay purchased their farm in Winthrop in 1984 where they continued to live. Melvin’s life was devoted to his faith, family and farming.
Melvin was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and the St. John Paul II Cluster Knights of Columbus. He took an active part in several church and civic roles. Melvin enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Melvin is survived by his Wife: Kay Matteson of Winthrop; 2 Daughters: Angela (Jay) Holt of Independence & Laurie (Jeff) Quint of Swisher; Son-In-Law: Steven Flaucher of Winthrop; 7 Grandchildren & 10 Great Grandchildren: Kristen (Luke) Jensen of Independence, Isabella, Avery, Lane and Axle; Murphy (Amy) Quint of Fairfax, Jayla, Zoey and Cooper; Morgan (Adam) Lyness of Independence, Crosby and Cade; Nolan Quint of Cedar Rapids; Hunter Quint of Swisher, Charlotte; Brandon Flaucher (Megan Pickhinke) of North Liberty and Matteson Quint of New York, New York; Sister-In-Law: Ann Matteson of Independence and Nieces and Nephews.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; brother: Merlin Matteson; sister: Marcia (Don) Barske; parents-in-law: Dr. A.J. & Julia Murphy and 2 brothers-in-law: Patrick Murphy and John Murphy.
