CEDAR RAPIDS — He’s still perfect.
Adam Petrzelka won his seventh Hobby Stocks feature race in as many attempts Friday at Hawkeye Downs Speedway.
To make it a flawless seven-for-seven in 2024, Petrzelka had to make a late push while running bumper-to-bumper against his brother, Matt Petrzelka.
“We’ve got mirrors and I saw him looking at it,” Adam Petrzelka said. “With mirrors, you get a two-tap rule. I tapped him twice and he never moved, so I had to move him harder.”
Adam Petrzelka found the inside edge in the final two laps as he narrowly jockeyed past his brother.
“I don’t really ever race dirty,” Adam said. “I’ve got to get the front end of the turn a little bit better on the outside. I think I’ve got to get it fast and clean next time — but I’m sure if the roles were reversed, he’d do the same thing.”
Corey Crispin wins chaotic Hornets race
Corey Crispin took the checkered flag in the Hornets feature—his third this season.
“I didn’t know what was going to happen; there was a lot of chaos going on out there,” Crispin said.
There were two stoppages in Friday’s race. The first came during the opening lap — the second happened on the third go-round.
“I got it right the second time and made some moves,” Crispin said. “On the cone there, I chose the bottom. I didn’t know how it was going to work, but I noticed a couple mistakes of the guys in front of me. As soon as I saw they’d lost a fraction of a second, I jumped to the outside and cleared them.”
Crispin extended his points lead to three over Chad Vozenilek, who finished second.
Jackson Lewis leads the most important Legends lap
Jackson Lewis led just one lap in the Legends feature race — it just happened to be the final one.
“I was kind of taking it easy the first half of the race because, just based off practice and in the heat race, driving it harder and harder, it just started to fall off more and more,” Lewis said. “I tried to keep it underneath me as much as I possibly could and really let the tires not get overcooked.”
This was the Lakeville, Minn., resident’s second time racing at HD this season and his first win.
“The Hawkeye Downs competition is really stiff,” Lewis said. “These guys, they can go anywhere and run pretty darn well, so to have success out here and have good runs means a lot.”
Brandon Herb gets his second win of the season
In Sportsmans, Brandon Herb found victory lane for the second time in 2024, edging Greg Hentrich.
“I mean, he (Hentrich) and Dave (Ballstaedt) were racing side by side for the whole thing,” Herb said. “I finally got a gap and cleared them with about two (laps) to go. From there, I knew if I hit my marks, do what I need to do, I’d be alright.”
This is the first year Herb has won two features in the same season.
“I feel like we’re gaining momentum on this thing,” Herb said. “Tonight was a really great night. I wasn’t expecting this at all.”
Points leader Patrick Flannagan won Friday’s Sports Mods feature. It was his fifth victory of 2024 and third consecutive.
In the finale, Kacey Korsmo edged Kody King for the Late Model crown.
